Hello Reader,

You’ve finally carved out a little crafting time, and you sit down with a pack of patterned paper.

Now what?

You know that moment when the paper is so pretty… and then suddenly…

You don’t want to cut into it 😅
Or you’re not quite sure where to start.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. So today I thought I’d share the very first thing I do when I sit down to create with patterned paper, because this one small habit gives me an easy place to start and helps me turn pretty paper into an actual project.

What I Do First (So I actually use my paper)

Before I even think about a card design, I flip the pack over.

Right there on the back, Stampin’ Up! has already done the hard work for us by listing all the coordinating colours.

So instead of staring at the whole pack and wondering where to begin, I do this:

• Step 1: Check the colours on the back
• Step 2: Pull out one neutral, like Basic White or Crumb Cake, plus one or two colours from the list
• Step 3: Lay them next to your patterned paper

That’s it.

It gives me an easy starting point straight away, and suddenly the paper feels much less overwhelming. I’m not trying to come up with the perfect idea. I’m just picking a few colours and getting myself moving.

Once I’ve done that, it becomes so much easier to turn that pretty paper into an actual card.

A Go-To Sketch

When I need a little extra help getting started, I use a simple sketch like this one. It takes away the guesswork and helps me get straight into creating.

I used that same sketch for the card below, along with patterned paper and a few coordinating colours from the pack.
